Day 6

"I will no longer have mercy on the house of Israel"

Text: Hosea 1:6

THE BESTOWAL OF MERCY

God’s mercy is often taken for granted. God had shown much mercy to Israel from the inception of the Northern Kingdom. There came a time when God declared that He would no longer give mercy to Israel.

“And she conceived again and bore a daughter.
Then God said to him:
‘Call her name Lo-Ruhamah,
For I will no longer have mercy
on the house of Israel,
But I will utterly take them away.'”
Hosea 1:6

1. “And she conceived again and bore a daughter”

a) Gomer’s firstborn was a son called Jezreel.
b) The second child was a daughter.

2. God’s word to Hosea

a) Call her name “Lo-Ruhamah”.
b) That was certainly
i) Not a pretty name.
ii) Not a name that would give hope or joy.

3. “For I will no longer have mercy on the house of Israel”

a) Jehu was raised up to curb the wickedness of Omri’s dynasty.
b) Idolatry was rampant in that dynasty.
c) Wickedness reached high levels in the reign of King Ahab.

4. Commendation of Jehu

a) God said to Jehu

“Because you have done well in doing what is right in My sight,
and have done to the house of Ahab all that was in My heart,
your sons shall sit on the throne of Israel to the fourth generation.”
2 Kings 10:30

b) This word was fulfilled.
c) The last king, the fourth lasted only 6 months. He was killed in public (2 Kings 15:8-10).

5. Jehu’s disregard and God’s withdrawal of His mercy

Jehu had his own ideas about how he wanted to rule Israel.

“But Jehu took no heed to walk in the law
of the LORD God of Israel with all his heart;
for he did not depart from the sins of Jeroboam,
who had made Israel sin…
The Lord began to cut off parts of Israel…”
2 Kings 10:31, 32
