"Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many..."

Text: Hebrews 9:28

DEATH AND JUDGMENT

Two of the most dreaded thoughts must be “death and judgment”. Many avoid dwelling on these subjects out of sheer fear! Others attempt to deny these thoughts by dismissing them as religious views. The author of Hebrews sought to deal with these thoughts squarely.

“And as it is appointed for men to die once, but after this
the judgment, so Christ was offered once to bear the sins
of many. To those who eagerly wait for Him He will appear
a second time, apart from sin, for salvation.”
Hebrews 9:27-28

1. It is appointed

a) All men will die once.
b) There will also be certain divine judgment.

2. Christ was offered once to bear the sins of many

a) Christ was offered as a sacrifice for sin.
b) Unfortunately not all would believe in Christ as the Perfect sacrifice.
c) But to the many who would receive Him as Saviour He would bear their sins.

3. To those who eagerly wait for Him

a) If there was genuine salvation there would also be a deeper understanding of the Saviour.
b) He has returned to His Father and He functions as our great High Priest.
c) He promises to return to receive His own to Himself.
d) Those with genuine faith in Him eagerly wait for His return.

4. He will appear a second time, apart from sin, for salvation

a) He will come again a second time! (This is our great Christian hope)
b) His second coming would not be with reference to bearing away sins.
c) He would come and grant salvation (with reference to “glorification” Cf. Romans 8:30).
