"Fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation."

Text: Hebrews 9:10

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF THE MOSAIC LAW

There were many reasons why God gave Moses so many laws. The following text discusses this topic of law giving.

“Concerned only with food and drinks, various washings,
and fleshly ordinances imposed until the time of reformation.”
Hebrews 9:10

1. Food and drinks

a) This is a reference to the dietary laws (Cf. Leviticus 11)
b) Some reasons why these were imposed:-
i) For reasons of health.
ii) To teach obedience to the Lord.

2. Various washings

a) This law has to do with ritualistic or ceremonial cleansing.
b) Some reasons these laws were given.
i) For the protection of the community especially with reference to diseases (Cleansing of lepers Leviticus 13-14).
ii) To cultivate a high regard for the Lord and Tabernacle worship.

3. Fleshly ordinances

a) These laws were essentially judicial.
b) There were many laws to regulate society and to keep law and order.
i) Laws to punish wrong doers (Cf. Leviticus 18-19).
ii) Laws to uphold justice (especially for the poor and oppressed).

4. Until the time of reformation

The Mosaic laws were not meant to last forever! They would be in effect “until the time of reformation”. That era would be the dawning of the New Covenant! The law of grace and faith in Christ would then take over!
