Day 205

"He has made the first obsolete..."

Text: Hebrews 8:13

BLESSINGS AND CURSES IN THE OLD COVENANT

Contained within the old Mosaic Covenant were Blessings and Curses (Deuteronomy 27-28).

1. Blessings

These would be outpoured in abundance to all who kept the words of the Covenant (Cf. Deuteronomy 28:1-14).

2. Curses

These would also be poured out on those who disregarded the Covenantal laws (Cf. Deuteronomy 28:15-68).

A NEW COVENANT HAD TO BE FOUND

Israel could not have survived in the Old Covenant! A New Covenant just had to be found! The following text describes how God graciously planned for the New Covenant.

“For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness,
and their sins and their lawless deeds I will remember no more.
in that He says, ‘A new covenant,’ He has made the first obsolete.
now what is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to
vanish away.”
Hebrews 8:12-13

1. Dealing with the problem of sins

God, being holy and just, has to deal with the problem of sin. God would especially extend great mercy and grace in the New Covenant.

a) Mercy would be extended to the sinful and unrighteous.
b) All lawless deeds would be remembered no more.

2. Dealing with the Old Covenant

a) The old covenant is declared “obsolete”.
b) It would be considered “old” and would “vanish away” in due process.

3. Establishing a New Covenant

a) Only with the passing away of the Old Covenant could the New Covenant be established.
b) This New Covenant was decreed by God and established by Christ (Cf. Luke 22:20).
