Day 199

"A better covenant... established on better promises."

Text: Hebrews 8:6

APPRECIATING THE COVENANTS OF GOD

The Scriptures record a number of covenants God established with mankind. Let us consider the following:-

1. Covenant with Noah Genesis 9:9

2. Covenant with Abraham Genesis 15, 17

3. Covenant with Levi Numbers 3-4; Malachi 2:4

4. Covenant with David 2 Samuel 7; Psalm 89

FEATURES OF ALL COVENANTS

The following features are typically found in all covenants!

1. Preamble where God declares what He has done for His people.

2. Promises are made by God in the Covenants.

3. Promise of the recipients to fulfill all Covenant requirements.

SIGNIFICANCE FOUND IN ALL COVENANTS

Each covenant had its own special significance (though obviously there would be some overlaps). The following may be observed:-

1. It marks a new chapter:-

a) Of God’s relationship with man.
b) Of man’s relationship with God.

2. It marks a fresh beginning of hope:-

a) Each covenant has an offer of a fresh sense of hope.
b) Each covenant is therefore to be studied carefully with references to the promises given by God.

THE NEW COVENANT ESTABLISHED BY JESUS

The author of Hebrews in a nutshell had this to say about the New Covenant.

“He is also Mediator of a better covenant,
which was established on better promises.”
Hebrews 8:6
