"He did once for all when He offered up Himself..."

Text: Hebrews 7:27

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF CHRIST’S DEATH

The author of Hebrews now touches on a very important subject. What offering did Jesus give when He was anointed and consecrated as high priest?

“For this He did once for all when
He offered up Himself.”
Hebrews 7:27d

1. For this He did once

a) Jesus did have an offering to present to God
However, this was not in the usual expressions of sin and burnt offerings!
b) He would fulfill the prophecy as the Lamb of God
i) “He was led as a lamb to the slaughter…” Isaiah 53:7c
ii) “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” John 1:29
c) The significance of Christ’s death was carefully noted (Cf. Isaiah 53)
i) He would be wounded for our transgressions (Cf. Isaiah 53:5a).
ii) He would be bruised for our iniquities (Cf. Isaiah 53:5b).
iii) The chastisement for our peace would be upon Him (Cf. Isaiah 53:5c).
iv) His soul would be an offering for sin (Cf. Isaiah 53:10c).
v) He shall justify as many as believed Him (Cf. Isaiah 53:11b).
vi) He would bear the sins of many (Cf. Isaiah 53:12e).
vii) He would make intercession for transgressors (Cf. Isaiah 53:12f).

2. He offered Himself

Jesus strongly taught that He would personally lay down His life for His sheep (Cf. John 10:11). He went on to explain specifically what He meant.

“No one takes it from Me, but I lay it down of Myself,
I have power to lay it down; and I have power to take it again.
This commandment I have received from My Father.”
John 10:18

Jesus’ offer of Himself as the Lamb of God needed to be made only once! Such was the greatness of the sufficiency of His sacrifice! The unique Son of God’s sacrifice of Himself would of course be enough for the sins of all mankind!
