"An unchangeable priesthood..."

Text: Hebrews 7:24

LIMITATIONS OF THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD NOTED

The limitations of the Levitical priesthood were obvious. The following may be noted:-

1. Human limitations

The fact that the priests of the Levitical order were sinful human beings highlights the limitation of the system. The history of the Levitical system was flawed right from the beginning (Cf. Leviticus 10; Malachi 1-2).

2. Divine limitation

a) God never intended the Levitical priesthood to be an everlasting order.
b) As long as the Levitical priests would keep His laws they could serve Him.
c) When they perpetually grieved Him He cancelled the Levitical priesthood.

ANOTHER LIMITATION NOTED

The following text highlights another solemn fact.

“Also there were many priests, because
they were prevented by death from continuing.”
Hebrews 7:23

1. There were indeed numerous priests (the entire tribe of Levi).

2. As human beings they would die.

3. Thus there was no chance of any significant “continuity”.

AN UNCHANGEABLE PRIESTHOOD

A wonderful contrast is offered in the following text.

“But He, because He continues forever,
has an unchangeable priesthood.”
Hebrews 7:24

1. What is obviously and badly needed- “An unchangeable priesthood”.

2. Only One Person can offer that.

a) Jesus would be the only One who can offer an unchangeable priesthood.
b) This is simply because “He continues forever!”
