"...without an oath."

Text: Hebrews 7:20

THE LEVITICAL PRIESTHOOD

Many thought and believed that this was meant to be a perpetual ministry! However, was this really the case? We have an interesting insight concerning the Levitical priesthood in the following text.

“For they have become priests without an oath…”
Hebrews 7:21a

1. They have become priests

a) This is an obvious reference to the ordination of priests.
b) The context is that of the Levitical priesthood.

2. Without an oath

a) This is a reference to an “oath” from God.
b) God did not give an oath to the Levitical priesthood that it would be a permanent system.

REBUKE OF BAD PRIESTS

The last prophetic book in the Old Testament had a special message to the Levitical priests!

“‘For the lips of a priest should keep knowledge,
And people should seek the law from his mouth;
For he is the messenger of the LORD of hosts.
But you have departed from the way;
You have caused many to stumble at the law.
You have corrupted the covenant of Levi,’
Says the LORD of hosts.
Therefore I also have made you contemptible and base
Before all the people, because you have not kept My ways,
But have shown partiality in the law.”
Malachi 2:7-9

1. Revelation of sins

a) Departure from the way.
b) Many were stumbled through the bad Levitical priests.
c) Corrupted the covenant of Levi.

2. Rebuke and rejection

The Levitical priesthood was severely chastised by the Lord!
