"Priest of the Most High God..."

Text: Hebrews 7:1

PAYING CAREFUL ATTENTION TO THE BIBLICAL TEXT

The description of Melchizedek is carefully noted in the following text.

“For this Melchizedek, king of Salem,
priest of the Most High God, who met Abraham
returning from the slaughter of the kings and blessed him.”
Hebrews 7:1

1. Careful attention was paid to the Genesis text (Cf. Genesis 14:19-20).

2. Careful preservation of the following must be noted:-

a) The Person of Melchizedek
i) He was acknowledged as “king of Salem”.
ii) He was also called “Priest of the Most High God”.
b) The historical context was also noted
i) There was a battle between two warring coalitions.
ii) One group had captured Abram’s nephew, Lot.
iii) Abram joined a coalition that fought off these marauders.
iv) He was successful in rescuing Lot.

3. He blessed him

a) This is a reference to Melchizedek blessing Abraham.
b) The fact of being able to pronounce a blessing.
i) This identified Melchizedek as one who truly represented God.
ii) He was indeed priest of the Lord, here addressed by an ancient title “Most High God”.
c) The rationale for pronouncing this blessing

Abram was good and righteous in desiring to rescue his nephew despite their falling out (Cf. Genesis 13:5-13). God’s blessing of Abraham’s part was recognized.
