"The forerunner... Jesus"

Text: Hebrews 6:20

ENTERING INTO THE VERY PRESENCE OF GOD

What a daring hope we have in Christ Jesus the Lord! Let us ponder this glorious hope we have in the following text.

“Where the forerunner has entered for us, even Jesus,
having become High Priest forever according
to the order of Melchizedek.”
Hebrews 6:20

1. A new title- “The forerunner… even Jesus”

a) Jesus has been accorded many well-earned titles in the Book of Hebrews.
b) He has been accorded a new one… He is called “the forerunner” (“prodromos”).

2. A forerunner “for us”

a) In this role Jesus has gone ahead of us and “for us”.
b) His task is to prepare the way for us to enter into the Presence of God.

3. High Priest according to the order of Melchizedek

a) Emphasis on the “order of Melchizedek”.
i) This is obvious.
ii) This order is emphasized to distinguish it from the Aaronic order.
b) What the old priesthood could not do.
i) The high priest of the Aaronic order could never be described as a forerunner.
ii) He was allowed into God’s Presence, in the Holy of holies, just once a year.
c) Jesus the High Priest of the order of Melchizedek.
i) He was a forerunner on our behalf for He intends to bring us into God’s Presence, behind the Veil
ii) The Order of Melchizedek was vastly different! Jesus had the right and the power to bring the heirs of promise into His Father’s Presence!
