"It is impossible for God to lie..."

Text: Hebrews 6:18

THE HOLY CHARACTER OF GOD

The character and the nature of God are totally intertwined. The character of God is derived from His very nature. One essential attribute of God is that He does not lie- indeed He cannot lie! If ever He gave His word of promise, He is actually honour bound to keep His every word. Unfortunately, man seems to have great trouble understanding and believing God at His word. In order to help man overcome this problem God did a very special thing. The following text highlights this act of God.

“That by two immutable things, in which it is impossible
for God to lie, we might have strong consolation, who have fled
for refuge to lay hold of the hope set before us.”
Hebrews 6:18

1. By two immutable things

What are these two immutable things? They may be simply stated as:-

a) The promise of God
i) God is bound by His own nature to keep every promise made.
ii) It should have been enough for man to have been given God’s promise.
b) The oath of God
i) This was given by God.
ii) This was His special way of showing that He understood and accepted the ways of man.
iii) An oath, sworn against His own holy name, was given by God.
c) The statement of this oath
The following text records the oath that God swore to Abraham.

“By Myself I have sworn, says the LORD,
because you have done this thing, and have not withheld
your son, your only son-
blessing I will bless you, and multiplying I will multiply your
descendants as the stars of the heaven…”
Genesis 22:16-17

2. Impossible for God to lie

a) By virtue of His character and nature.
b) By virtue of this oath that He had taken to confirm His promise of blessing.
