"Surely blessing I will bless you..."

Text: Hebrews 6:14

THE CONTENT OF GOD’S PROMISE TO ABRAHAM

It is exhilarating to the soul to know that God regards His word to man so solemnly! It is just as exciting to study the content of God’s promises to Abraham.

“Surely blessing I will bless you,
and multiplying I will multiply you.”
Hebrews 6:14

1. The Promise God made to Abraham

a) God repeated His promise to Abraham numerous times (Cf. Genesis 12-22).
b) It would be good to bear in mind that each time God repeated His promise to Abraham He was doing the following things:-
i) He was confirming His promise.
ii) He was reinforcing His word.
iii) He was encouraging Abraham to continue to exercise “faith and patience”.

2. A summary of the content of God’s promise to Abraham

Two features are highlighted in this text:-

a) “Surely blessing I will bless you”
i) The promise of blessing stands out.
ii) God swore to Abraham that He would most surely bless him.
iii) This promise of blessing would extend to his descendants.
b) “And multiplying I will multiply you”
i) This is a reference to how Abraham from a humble start would see his line greatly multiplied.
ii) Behind this promise of multiplying Abraham’s descendants was God’s pardoning grace and His merciful provision.
iii) At an even deeper level the promise of multiplying Abraham’s lineage was the inclusion of all spiritual children of Abrahamâ?¦including Gentiles (Cf. Galatians 3:26-29).
