"When God made a promise to Abraham..."

Text: Hebrews 6:13

UNDERSTANDING THE PROMISES OF GOD

Much has been said about the promises of God! The author offers his personal understanding on this subject of God’s promises.

“For when God made a promise to Abraham,
because He could swear by no one greater,
He swore by Himself…”
Hebrews 6:13

1. When God made a promise to Abraham

a) It is not wrong to speak of the promises of God.
i) It is not a presumption on man’s part.
ii) It is not foolish to believe in God’s promises either.
b) God did make promises.
c) One of the clearest examples of how God made promises is seen in His word to Abraham.

2. Because He could swear by no one greater

a) A promise is more than just a solemn word uttered.
b) A promise is a firm statement backed up by an oath.
i) When a person makes an oath he swears by someone greater.
ii) But in God’s case there was no one greater.
iii) Nevertheless He swore an oath- to underscore the solemnity of His promises.

3. He swore by Himself

a) God in giving a promise is bound to keep His solemn oath.
b) He cannot go back on His promise.

Man’s part is to exercise faith and patience in God keeping His promises! That surely cannot be too hard to do!
