"It is impossible..."

Text: Hebrews 6:4

A VERY WRONG UNDERSTANDING

God is indeed very gracious, compassionate and forgiving! Some believe that since God is all of the above, they can do the following:-

1. They can return to God at any time they please.

2. They can start where they last left off.

3. They can resume life and ministry as long as they have made confession of their sins.

The author of Hebrews disagrees with this wrong understanding and application of the knowledge of God.

CONSIDERATION OF “THE IMPOSSIBLE” SITUATION (“adunaton”)

This phrase must be studied very carefully, especially in the light of the Scriptures. The ministry of Jeremiah well illustrates the significance of the meaning of this phrase. There may come a time when this phrase “it is impossible” would apply. Judah’s state of sin may be cited as a powerful case in point. There were certain situations where the punishment God warned would have to be meted out!

1. Grievous and repeated sin can create this situation.

2. Rejection of God’s word repeatedly can result in an impossible situation.

3. Stubbornness of heart and spirit can render a situation impossible.

DOES THIS CLASH WITH OTHER TEACHINGS?

How does this teaching equate with what Jesus said?

“The things which are impossible with men are possible
With God.”
Luke 18:27

It would appear that the Scriptures have clashed with each other! In further analysis the Scriptures do not clash! All things are indeed possible with God, unless He Himself made certain special decrees. (A study of the book of Jeremiah would prove this point most poignantly).

1. God decreed that Judah would be exiled. Nothing could stop this decree from being fulfilled.

2. He further commanded Jeremiah not to pray for Judah for He would not hear those prayers (Cf. Jeremiah 7:16)

The “impossible situation” can occur. Judah fell in 586 B.C.!
