"Laying... the foundation..."

Text: Hebrews 6:1

LAYING A STRONG FOUNDATION I

Let us take time to attempt to lay a strong foundation for our faith in Christ! Here is a list of basic doctrines that we must “master” in the laying down of a strong foundation for our faith.

1. Doctrine of dead works

a) Good works cannot bring about salvation (Cf. Galatians 2:16).
b) All our good works are well compared to “dead works”.
c) We must repent (change our understanding) from thinking that “dead works” would earn us salvation.

2. Faith toward God

a) There must be genuine faith in God.
b) This genuine faith must include acceptance of the following:-
i) That God has provided Christ as our Saviour.
ii) We need to have faith in Christ as our Redeemer.
iii) This faith is one that would last us a lifetime.
iv) It grows stronger with understanding of the Scriptures.

3. Doctrine of baptisms

Three were noted in the New Testament:-

a) The baptism of John
i) This was in preparation for the coming of Christ.
ii) Those baptized by John had to be re-baptised (Cf. Acts 17).
b) The baptism of the Holy Spirit (Cf. John 1:33; Acts 1:8)
c) Water baptism (Cf. Matthew 28:19-20)

These are considered foundational doctrines. We would do well to lay these foundations for ourselves today.
