"You have come to need milk and not solid food."

Text: Hebrews 5:12

EVERY REASON TO MATURE SPIRITUALLY

God has made it possible for every child of His to become spiritually mature. Let us ponder the provision He has made! Three special provisions are highlighted:-

1. He has given the Lord Jesus Christ

a) To be our Saviour;

b) To be our merciful High Priest.

2. He has given us the Scriptures to help us deepen our spiritual understanding.

a) It is the means by which God speaks to us.

b) It is a Living Word that can interact with us most meaningfully.

3. He has given us His Holy Spirit.

a) He ministers to our very souls deeply.

b) He indwells us so that He can help us in the most personal way.

A REGRETTABLE STATE OF AFFAIRS

The following statement is a most regrettable spiritual state of affairs.

“And you have come to need milk and not solid food.”
Hebrews 5:12c

1. You have come to need milk

a) The recipients (readers of Hebrews) must have been believers for a significant span of time (historical time context must be borne in mind).

b) Sadly the passage of time did not see the believers make any significant progress.

c) Their spiritual state was such that they still needed “milk” (Cf. 1 Peter 2:2).

2. And not solid food

a) There should have been a logical progression from infancy to adulthood (spiritually).

b) Sadly there was regrettably hardly any spiritual growth; thus no “solid food” could be countenanced.
