"He learned obedience"

Text: Hebrews 5:8b

A LESSON THAT MANY FAILED AT

There were many vital lessons that Jesus had to learn in His being Man. One of the most important lessons that few had learned was “obedience”. Many failed this subject.

1. Adam and Eve failed miserably (Cf. Genesis 3)

a) They were given clear and specific instructions. They were not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.
b) Their failure had severe repercussions- on all mankind.

2. King Saul failed miserably too (Cf. 1 Samuel 15)

a) He was given a special and very specific task. He was to battle the Amalekites and mete out God’s justice.
b) His failure to obey cost him the throne of Israel.

A CLASSIC STATEMENT

A classic statement was made concerning the issue of obedience to God.

“So Samuel said:
‘Has the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings
and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD?
Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to heed
than the fat of rams.
For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft,
And stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry.
Because you have rejected the word of the LORD
He also has rejected you from being king.'”
1 Samuel 15:22-23

1. Disobedience is a very grave sin in God’s sight

2. It is compared to:

a) Rebellion against God.
b) Rejection of God’s word.

JESUS HAD TO LEARN OBEDIENCE

Jesus, as Man, had to learn what it means to be fully obedient to God! He had to accept God’s word and walk in total obedience. He learned this lesson perfectly.
