"Though He was a Son..."

Text: Hebrews 5:8

THE TEMPTATION OF SATAN

Satan knew the identity of Jesus, that He was none other than “The Son of God”. The devil assailed Jesus on this point after He had undergone a forty-day period of fasting in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11). He urged Jesus to take advantage of His being God’s Son.

“Now when the tempter came to Him, he said,
‘If You are the Son of God, command that these stones
become bread.”
Mathew 4:3

Jesus knew better! Being Son of God did not entitle Him to take liberties. He rejected this temptation outright.

“But He answered and said,
‘It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone,
but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.””
Matthew 4:4

LESSONS ABOUT SONSHIP

Jesus did not take His Sonship lightly. The following text illustrates this fact.

“Though He was a Son, yet He learned”
Hebrews 5:8a

1. Significance of the word “Son”

Three aspects may be highlighted:-

a) It describes His eternal relationship with His Father.
b) It also describes His becoming flesh (Cf. John 1:14).
c) It further describes His role as the High Priest according to the Order of Melchizedek.

2. Yet He learned

a) There were lessons about being Man.
b) There were lessons about being High Priest.
c) These lessons had to be learned as Man:-
i) They had to be learned deeply.
ii) They had to be mastered quickly.
iii) They had to help Him minister as High Priest perfectly
