THE HUMAN CONCEPT OF A “DEADLINE”

The concept of a deadline is not difficult to comprehend. The essential idea behind this concept involves time. A news article must be handed in on time, or that piece of news would suffer a great loss of value. In some cases it would become “dead”. Readers want to have fresh and up-to-date news. Yesterday’s news is no news!

There is another concept used with reference to manufactured goods. There is always an “expiry date”. Food consumed beyond its expiry date may even be dangerous. Medicinal products could also be rendered useless when the expiry date has been reached.

A SIMILAR BIBLICAL CONCEPT

We have a similar Biblical concept taught in the following text.

“Again He designates a certain day, saying in David, ‘Today,’
after such a long time, as it has been said:
‘Today, if you will hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.'”
Hebrews 4:7

1. Authors identified

a) The Divine Author is mentioned and described simply as “He”.
b) The human instrument was identified as “David”:-
i) Psalm 95 does not have a superscription that describes David as its author.
ii) This reference could simply be a general reference to the psalms of which David was a major contributor.
iii) This could also be a special revelation given to the author of Hebrews to inform him that David was the author of Psalm 95.

2. Application of the message of the Lord through David

a) The focus is on the word “Today”.
b) The present moment is “today”.
c) When one hears the Lord speaking to the heart, the wisest response to be made must be “Today”.
d) Delaying a response would be unwise and dangerous for it could lead to a hardened heart.
