That we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Text: Hebrews 4:16
THE MANY NEEDS OF LIFE
There are numerous needs in life! Some needs are more obvious than others. Let us consider some “spiritual needs” highlighted in the following texts:-
1. The need to give earnest heed to God’s word (Cf. Hebrews 2:1).
2. The need to hold fast to our confession of faith (Cf. Hebrews 3:6, 14).
3. The need to have a healthy fear of the Lord (Hebrews 4:1).
THE MANY PRESENT DANGERS
There are also many very real dangers that we must take note of. The following may be highlighted:-
1. The danger of drifting away (Cf. Hebrews 2:1)
2. The danger of hardening the heart (Cf. Hebrews 3:8a)
3. The danger of rebellion (Cf. Hebrews 3:8b)
4. The danger of going astray (Cf. Hebrews 3:10)
5. The danger of not knowing God’s ways (Cf. Hebrews 3:10c)
6. The danger of unbelief (Cf. Hebrews 3:12a)
7. The danger of departing from the Lord (Cf Hebrews 3:12b)
COMING TO THE THRONE OF GRACE
The above “needs” and “dangers” are very real! What should we pray for when we come to the throne of grace? Let us ponder this encouraging text once again.
“Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace,
that we may obtain mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
Hebrews 4:16
1. Obtain mercy
Let us plead for the Lord’s mercy in the face of all the needs and dangers of life!
2. And find grace to help in time of need
Let us also plead for the grace of God to be given to us! Mercy and grace are the two most vital things to pray for in our “time of need”. The basis of God answering our prayers would be His “mercy and grace”. Our part is to be genuinely humble before Him!
