The word of God is living and powerful...

Text: Hebrews 4:12

REFERENCE TO THE WORD OF GOD

The author of Hebrews made many references to the Word of God in his epistle. There is no question about the very high regard he had for the Word of God. Let us take a look at some of those references.

1. The Word was a reference to the Scriptures. They are referred as the means through which God spoke.

“He says…”
Hebrews 1:7, 8

2. The Word was associated with the angels.

“The word spoken through angels…”
Hebrews 2:2

3. The Word was certainly associated with the Lord Jesus

“Which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord…”
Hebrews 2:3b

A WONDERFUL DESCRIPTION OF THE WORD OF GOD

We now have a wonderful description of the Word of God in the following text.

“For the word of God is living and powerful,
and sharper than any two-edged sword,
piercing even to the division of soul and spirit,
and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner
of the thoughts and intents of the heart.”
Hebrews 4:12

Let us seek to understand the reasons why the author wrote these words about the Word of God.

1. To call attention to the Scriptures cited:-

a) Many Scripture portions have been cited.
b) These texts ought to be given the highest regard.

2. To emphasise the nature of the Scriptures:-

a) Sometimes the true nature of the Scriptures is just not fully appreciated.
b) This leads to a poor regard and thus little heed is given to the Word of God.

3. To have a fresh sense of appreciation of the Word of God:-

a) This would be healthy.
b) This would pave the way for a correct and appropriate response to the Word of God.
