Was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?

Text: Hebrews 3:16

A CLOSER LOOK

The matter of a hardened heart was so serious that the author of Hebrews devoted much time writing on this subject.

“For who, having heard, rebelled?
Indeed, was it not all who came out of Egypt,
led by Moses?”
Hebrews 3:16

1. For who, having heard, rebelled?

a) It is possible to hear:-
i) God’s voice (Cf. Exodus 20)
ii) God’s word proclaimed (Cf. Exodus 19:7)
b) It is possible to have been:-
i) Initially impacted (Cf. Exodus 14:31)
ii) Significantly impacted (Cf. Exodus 20:18-19)
c) It is possible to rebel:-
i) A rebellious spirit expresses itself in complaining (Cf. Exodus 15:24; 16:2).
ii) It also expresses itself in contending with the Lord (Cf. Exodus 17:7).
iii) It further expresses itself in revolting against the established leadership (Cf. Numbers 16– the rebellion of Korah).

2. Was it not all who came out of Egypt, led by Moses?

a) The rebels are clearly identified.
b) They were people who had experienced the Lord’s deliverance from Egypt.
i) They were freed from bondage.
ii) They were being led to the Promised Land of Canaan.
c) God had given them a great leader in Moses.

Despite all that God had done, still the spirit of rebellion prevailed!
