Today, if you will hear His voice...

Text: Hebrews 3:15

A NECESSARY REPETITION

Some things need to be repeated. The following text was essentially a repetition of a previous text (Cf. Hebrews 3:7).

“While it is said:
‘Today, if you hear His voice,
Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.”
Hebrews 3:15

1. Reasons for repetition

a) Because of the importance of the message content.
b) Because there was very real danger afoot.
c) Because the problem had not been tackled adequately before.

2. Today

a) The sense of urgency is unmistakable.
b) There must be swift response.

3. If you hear His voice

a) This does not mean an “audible voice”.
b) It is a reference to understanding what God says:-
i) When we read the Scriptures.
ii) When we hear the Word of God preached/taught.
c) God’s voice is to be recognized speaking to all through the Scriptures.

4. Do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion

a) The onus is placed on the hearer.
b) The hearer must do his part in ensuring that his heart is not hardened.
c) The example of erring Israel must be borne in mind.
d) Their “rebellion” must teach us to avoid such a problem arising in our hearts!
