"The Apostle "

Text: Hebrews 3:1

A MOST ENGAGING REFERENCE

The author of Hebrews offers a very engaging reference to Jesus in the following text.

“Consider the Apostle and High Priest of our confession,
Christ Jesus.”
Hebrews 3:1c

1. The Apostles of Jesus

We are familiar with the idea of Jesus calling some to be apostles. The process seems to be as follows:

a) There is first a calling to follow Jesus (Cf. Matthew 4:19).
b) Those that followed Him were at first called “disciples” (Cf. Matthew 10:1).
c) Some were appointed as “apostles” (Cf. Matthew 10:2).
d) To be called an “apostle” was significant:-
i) The apostle had been sent to fulfill a specific mission.
ii) He would be especially empowered to complete that mission.
iii) He would have God’s authority to fulfill his task.

2. Jesus as an Apostle

We may not be as familiar with this idea of Jesus being called “Apostle”. How may we understand Jesus being described as an “Apostle” in the above text?

a) The word “apostle” simply means “The Sent One”.
b) Jesus certainly believed that He was “sent”.
i) He spoke of being “sent” to do His Father’s work (Cf. John 4:34).
ii) He spoke of how this idea of being “sent” affected the way He worked (Cf. John 9:4).
c) Jesus certainly possessed all the features of an apostle.
i) He was filled with tremendous authority and power.
ii) His works certainly proved that He was indeed sent from God.
