"In things pertaining to God..."

Text: Hebrews 2:17

GUARDING OURSELVES FROM THE SIN OF PRESUMPTION

Man is very often guilty of great presumption. David was wise to offer this prayer to God.

“Keep back Your servant also from presumptuous sins;
Let them not have dominion over me.”
Psalm 19:13

Man presumes he knows all about God. He presumes he knows all there is to know about Jesus. How wrong we are! How we must guard ourselves against the sin of presumption.

THE ROLE OF JESUS AS OUR HIGH PRIEST

The role of Jesus as High Priest deserves careful study. Let us ponder afresh what the following text says about this role.

“That He might be a merciful and faithful High Priest
in things pertaining to God…”
Hebrews 2:17c

1. Things pertaining to God

a) The word “pertaining” was added to give further understanding.
b) Things (particle “ta”)
i) There are many “things” that pertain to God that we must understand.
ii) We must not dare to presume we know all there is to know about God.

2. A merciful and faithful High Priest

a) His task is to stand as One who represents God.
b) His task is also to stand as One who represents man.
c) One of His ministries as High Priest is to teach us “things pertaining to God”.
i) We must not be presumptuous in the realm of the knowledge of God.
ii) We must not be presumptuous in the realm of worship of God.
iii) We must not be presumptuous in the realm of service offered to God.

We need Jesus to be that “merciful and faithful High Priest” teaching us many vital “things pertaining to God”.
