"Partakers of flesh and blood... "

Text: Hebrews 2:14

DESCRIPTIONS THAT ENLIGHTEN

We have another important description of what it means to be a human being in the following text.

“Inasmuch then as the children have partaken of flesh and blood,
He Himself likewise shared in the same, that through death
He might destroy him who had the power of death, that is,
the devil.”
Hebrews 2:14

1. Descriptions that uplift

Man was wonderfully and tenderly described as:-

a) Brethren (Hebrews 2:12a)
b) Children (Hebrews 2:13b)

These uplifting descriptions bring much enlightenment and encouragement to the heart. What a tremendous blessing we have when Christ so identified with us!

2. Description that humbles

a) “Flesh and blood” is a very humbling description
i) It reminds us of our humanness and all its limitations.
ii) It reminds us of our humble creation.
iii) Flesh and blood is however not inherently evil.
b) “Flesh and blood” – Jesus “shared in the same”
i) We have a plain and very clear statement concerning the humanity of Jesus.
ii) This statement dismisses false teachings (resisted by the early 1st century Church) that Jesus did not possess true humanity- (incipient Gnosticism was a heretical belief that rejected any idea that Jesus possessed “flesh and blood” for that was deemed to be inherently evil)
iii) This was Jesus’ way of expressing total identification with His
“brethren”.
iv) Jesus subjected Himself to experience all that “flesh and blood” would.
