"I will declare Your name to My brethren..."

Text: Hebrews 2:12

THOROUGHLY FAMILIAR WITH THE SCRIPTURES

The author of Hebrews showed great familiarity with the Scriptures. He seemed to be particularly fond of the Book of Psalms, for he cited them again and again. Here is another quotation from the Book of Psalms.

“Saying,
‘I will declare Your name to My brethren:
In the midst of the assembly I will sing praise to You.”
Hebrews 2:12

1. The Messianic Psalms

a) The psalms cited (Hebrews 1 and 2) contained references to the Messiah.
b) These psalms would make sense only if they are applied to the Anointed One of God.
(Hence they are called Messianic Psalms.)
c) Different features are highlighted:-
i) His unique Sonship (Hebrews 1:5// Psalm 2:7)
ii) His everlasting throne (Hebrews 1:8// Psalm 45:6-7)

2. Psalm 22

a) This particular psalm contains:-
i) Prophetic material
ii) Messianic references
b) The suffering of Christ is foretold
i) His painful suffering on the Cross (Cf. Psalm 22:1)
ii) The taunting remarks of His enemies (Cf. Psalm 22:8)
c) Christ’s identification with His brethren (Cf. Psalm 22:22)
i) The Messiah shares precious knowledge of God and His name with His brethren.
ii) He sings the praise of God in the midst of the assembly of brethren.
