Hebrews

Day 44

He is not ashamed to call them brethren.

Text: Hebrews 2:11

A DEEPLY MOVING TEXT

One of the most moving texts in the Book of Hebrews may be found in the following text.

“For which reason He is not ashamed
to call them brethren.”
Hebrews 2:11c

1. We are guilty of shamefully failing the Lord

The following things describe “the average Christian” (Cf. Romans 6-7):

a) We are carnal, sold under sin (Cf. Romans 7:14).
b) Sin dwells in us (Cf. Romans 7:17, 20).
c) In our flesh nothing good dwells (Cf. Romans 7:18).
d) Evil is present within us (Cf. Romans 7:21).
e) We are wretched (Cf. Romans 7:24)

2. He is not ashamed of us

a) This is a staggering statement!
b) How could Jesus not be ashamed of us?

Three thoughts suggest themselves automatically:-

i) It must be because of His great love.
ii) It must be because of His abundant grace.
iii) It must be because of His immense store of mercy.

3. He is not ashamed to call (us) brethren

a) Christ’s suffering makes up for all our sins committed.
b) Christ’s salvation more than covers all our wretched sinfulness.
c) His sanctification more than makes up for all our sins.
d) His identification with all believers causes Him to say that He is not ashamed to call us His brethren.
