"Confirmed to us by those who heard Him."

Text: Hebrews 2:3d

A LITTLE CLUE CONCERNING THE AUTHOR OF HEBREWS

The following text gives us a little clue as to the identity of the person who wrote Hebrews.

“Which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord,
and was confirmed to us by those who heard Him.”
Hebrews 2:3e

1. There was no claim concerning the following:-

a) That he was an apostle appointed by Jesus.
b) That he was one of the original disciples of Jesus.

2. There was a specific reference to the following:-

a) Those who heard Him.
i) The apostle John wrote as an eyewitness (Cf. 1 John 1:1-3).
ii) The apostle Peter appealed to the significance of being an eye witness in Acts 1:21-22(Peter used this as a criterion to decide on the eligibility of apostleship).
b) Confirmed to us
i) This is an obvious reference to the teaching ministry of the apostles.
ii) This reference included those who also heard Jesus but were not ranked among the apostles.

3. Conclusion

a) The author of Hebrews may be likened to the evangelist-historian Luke.
b) He had carefully cultivated his understanding of the Doctrine of Christ till he was ready to write about Him with great skill and authority.
c) He does not wish to declare his identity because it would not have added significance to the Doctrine of Christ.
d) He demonstrated that it is possible not “to neglect so great a salvation”.
e) He further demonstrated that one does not need to be an original disciple to become significant and well-established in the faith!
