"Lest we drift away."

Text: Hebrews 2:1b

THE TERRIBLE CONSEQUENCES OF NOT HEEDING GOD’S WORD

What are some of the consequences when people do not give appropriate attention to God’s word?

1. Old Testament reference

a) There is the danger of despising God’s provision of Canaan (Cf. Psalm 106:24a).
b) There is prevailing unbelief (Cf. Psalm 106:24b)
c) A heart that complains soon replaces a heart of grateful obedience (Cf. Psalm 106:25a)
d) There is refusal to heed the voice of the Lord (Cf. Psalm 106:25b).

2. New Testament reference

a) There is rejection of the will of God (Cf. Luke 7:30).
b) Jesus described His hearers as a generation of “contrary children” (Cf. Luke 7:31-35).
c) Threats against the life of Jesus were anticipated (Cf. Luke 9:22)

HIGHLIGHTING ANOTHER PROBLEM

The author of Hebrews added another concern when people do not give appropriate heed to the teachings of the Lord Jesus.

“Lest we drift away.”

Hebrews 2:1b

Let us ponder this new danger that is highlighted in this text.

1. General knowledge of Jesus may not suffice.

2. Initial expression of “faith” in Jesus may not last out.

3. The danger of “drifting away” is very real.

a) People can drift away from their faith in God.
b) People can end up like ships that have lost their bearings.  They merely drift.

The problem of drifting away must be dealt with effectively. The best way is to begin to beware of the very real danger of drifting away! Then the all-important step of giving “more earnest heed” must be taken. Let us take our faith in God seriously.
