Day 314

"That we may be partakers of His holiness..."

Text: Hebrews 12:10

MOTIVE UNDERNEATH CORRECTIVE ACTION

All actions have motives beneath them! Dedicated earthly fathers have good motives beneath their corrective efforts. Our heavenly Father has the best of reasons why He chastens His children!

“For they indeed for a few days chastened us as seemed best
To them, but He for our profit, that we may be partakers of
His holiness.”
Hebrews 12:10

1. For a few days

a) This is a phrase that simply means “a short time”
b) The corrective process is usually done during childhood
c) When adulthood commences, the work of chastening has ended

2. As seemed best to them

a) Earthly fathers may have great motives
b) But they are still only fallible human beings
c) They correct only up to a point- “what seemed best”

3. But He for our profit

a) A distinct contrast is made here
b) God is infallible and unerring in His correction
c) His motive is to correct us “for our profit”

4. That we may be partakers of His holiness

a) The backdrop of sin must be borne in mind
b) God corrects us so that we might be freed from sinful habits
c) He desires us to be truly “holy”
d) He wants us to be like Him; He wants us to partake of His own attribute of holiness
