"We have had human fathers who corrected us..."

Text: Hebrews 12:9

HUMAN FATHER AND SON RELATIONSHIP

Every parent-child relationship involves correction (in whatever form that may take). This is the most common observation that may be made.

“Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us,
and we paid them respect. Shall we not much more readily
be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?”
Hebrews 12:9

1. Furthermore, we have had human fathers who corrected us

a) This observation may well be drawn from personal experience.
b) It is certainly a true observation of all parent-child relationships.
c) Correction would be part and parcel of a child’s upbringing (for obvious reasons).
i) Wrong action must be addressed and corrected.
ii) Right action must be taught to replace wrong ones.

2. We paid them respect

a) This is a very common observation.
b) Respect of parents is basic.

3. Shall we not much more readily be in subjection to the Father of spirits and live?

a) We subject ourselves to our earthly fathers.
b) If we do that should we not also practise subjection to God?
c) It would seem most logical to subject ourselves to God as our Father in heaven.

4. Father of spirits

a) God is indeed the Father of spirits.
b) Our very existence comes from the Father who has given us our spirits.
c) Our subjection to the Father of spirits could only lead to Life; and a great life of blessing at that
