"By faith he forsook Egypt..."

Text: Hebrews 11:27

THE EXERCISE OF FAITH

Faith is much more than just “a nice warm feeling” towards God. It is much more than just a religious confession of faith. For Moses, faith enabled him to do amazing things that the text below describes so succinctly.

“By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king;
for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.”
Hebrews 11:27

1. By faith he forsook Egypt

a) Egypt
i) It was in Moses’ time the centre of civilization.
ii) It was the seat of power in the region.
iii) It was famed for its wealth and culture.
b) Forsook Egypt
i) Moses had everything going for him, being son to Pharaoh’s daughter.
ii) In forsaking Egypt he forfeited everything all Egyptians would die for.

2. Not fearing the wrath of the king

a) The Pharaoh was a despotic in his rule of the kingdom.
b) Most feared him for the power he wielded.
c) Almost absolute power lay in his hands, and thus many feared his wrath; Moses disdained the might of the Pharaoh.

3. For he endured as seeing Him who is invisible

a) Faith enabled him to endure affliction.
b) Faith enabled him to do something most wondrous.
i) He could “see Him who is invisible”.
ii) Faith gave him such insight that he found strength to endure all things for the sake of God who had given him faith and a special calling.
