"Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater..."

Text: Hebrews 11:26

FAITH’S MANY INSIGHTS

As we read Hebrews, we cannot but be astonished at the many insights that faith reveals. Three may be highlighted:-

1. By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God (Hebrews 11:3).

2. By faith, Noah being divinely warned of things not yet seen (Hebrews 11:7).

3. Having seen them afar of and were assured of them (Hebrews 11:13).

A MOST ASTONISHING INSIGHT

Here is another of faith’s insight that is nothing less than astonishing!

“Esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches
than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.”
Hebrews 11:26

1. Esteeming the reproach of Christ

a) God gave to Moses an intimation of His plan to send the Messiah (Christ).
b) This Messiah would one day suffer great reproach from His enemies.
c) Moses, by faith, identified himself with Christ and His reproaches.
d) He too must have endured much reproach when he identified himself with the children of Israel.
i) Reproach from his Egyptian family.
ii) Reproach from his friends (contemporaries).
iii) Reproach from all who did not fully understand his faith.

2. Greater riches than the treasures in Egypt

a) There were riches untold in Egypt.
b) To Moses his faith and his identification with Christ would be “greater riches”.

3. He looked to the reward

Faith enables a person to look beyond the here and now! By faith, Moses looked forward to the reward that God had promised to all who had faith in Him (Hebrews 11:6). That reward would be fully enjoyed only in heaven (Hebrews 11:13-16).
