"...They seek a homeland."

Text: Hebrews 11:14

NO PLACE LIKE HOME

We are familiar with the phrase, “There is no place like home.” But where is
“home” to believers? The following text highlights a powerful truth.

“For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek
a homeland. And truly if they had called to mind that country
which they had come out, they would have had opportunity
to return. But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country.
Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has
prepared a city for them.”
Hebrews 11:14-16

1. An earthly homeland

a) The feelings for an earthly homeland can be very powerful.
b) The patriarchs declared (by their life) that they sought a homeland.
c) But this homeland was not an earthly one.

2. A heavenly country

a) The heart’s longing was for “a heavenly country”.
b) Heaven was decidedly a better place to end up.
c) But not because they experienced much misery in life.
i) The patriarchs were blessed with wealth.
ii) They experienced the Lord’s presence.

3. God’s response to all who found faith in Him

a) He was not ashamed to be called their God.
i) He was proud to have them as His children.
ii) They were not perfect, but He was not ashamed of their imperfection.
b) He has prepared for them a city.
i) Their faith in God would not be in vain.
ii) They would inherit that heavenly city.
