"These all died in faith..."

Text: Hebrews 11:13

A WONDERFUL PERSPECTIVE OF LIFE

How should we interpret the meaning of our life on earth? There are some who do not think that there is any meaning in life. They exist and then they expire. But there are some who believe that one should live by faith, and die in faith too. The following text describes how faith is factored in life.

“These all died in faith, not having received the promises,
but having seen them afar off were assured of them,
embraced them and confessed that they were strangers
and pilgrims on the earth.”
Hebrews 11:13

1. These all died in faith, not having received the promises

a) The patriarchs of Israel never saw the creation of the nation.
b) Thus they had not seen the fulfillment of God’s promises.
c) Nevertheless they did not die with sad regret.
d) They died with their faith intact.

2. But having seen them afar off were assured of them

a) Their faith in God gave them a special “inner vision”.
b) They saw from afar God fulfilling His promises to them.
c) Thus in their hearts they were assured that the promises of God were as good as fulfilled.

3. Embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth

a) Faith in God involved believing in His promises.
b) Believing in God’s promises also meant “embracing them”.
c) Embracing God’s promises also affected the way they interpreted their life on earth.
i) Faith expresses itself in a “confession” (a statement of faith).
ii) Life on earth is seen only as a journey.
iii) We are only “strangers and pilgrims on earth” (this life is only temporary!).
