"Faith is the substance of things hoped for..."

Text: Hebrews 11:1a

CLASSIC CHAPTERS

There are passages in the Scriptures that may be called “classic”. The following are clear examples:-

1. Classic chapter on Christian Love (Cf. 1 Corinthians 13)

2. Classic chapter on the Resurrection of Christ (Cf. 1 Corinthians 15)

3. Classic chapter on the subject of Faith (Hebrews 11)

WHY ARE THESE CALLED “CLASSIC CHAPTERS”?

These are called “classic chapters” for the following reasons:-

1. A whole chapter is devoted to the discussion of a vital doctrinal theme.

2. Significant truths on the subject are revealed.

3. Powerful words of encouragement are found in these classic chapters.

THE SUBJECT OF FAITH

One of the most important subjects found in the Scriptures is “faith”. Many Biblical writers touched on this subject.

1. Paul expounded the doctrine of justification by faith (Cf. Romans 1-8)

2. James emphasized works as a companion of genuine faith (Cf. James 1-2).

3. The author of Hebrews certainly highlighted the importance of faith.

“Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,
the evidence of things not seen.”
Hebrews 11:1

A WORKING DEFINITION OF FAITH

The author of Hebrews offered an excellent working definition of faith.

1. Faith is the substance of things hoped for

Faith involves a strong element of “hope”. These elements would include the promises of God that are not yet fulfilled. Faith is the substance of these hoped- for promises!

2. The evidence of things not seen

Faith is able to see and appreciate “things not seen” with the naked eye! Faith enables a person to see “the invisible” spiritual realm!
