"We are not of those who draw back to perdition..."
Text: Hebrews 10:39
A STRONG AVOWAL OF CONFIDENT FAITH
We have a very strong avowal of both confidence and endurance of faith in the following text.
“But we are not of those who draw back to perdition,
but of those who believe to the saving of the soul.”
Hebrews 10:39
Two categories of people were distinguished. To the author the two sides are diametrically opposite each other.
1. Those who draw back to perdition
To the author of Hebrews “drawing back” is an unthinkable and untenable option!
a) There are no reasons to “draw back”.
b) The only “reasons” why anyone would draw back would be the following:-
i) He did not possess a full knowledge of the Lord.
ii) He did not possess genuine faith in the first place.
iii) All his “experiences” of God were at best superficial.
c) To draw back (that is, “to draw away”) would result in “perdition” (destruction).
2. But we are not of those who draw back to perdition
a) The author draws a strong and clear line between the two categories.
b) He distances himself away from those who drew back from following after God.
3. But of those who believe to the saving of the soul
a) There were many of those who truly believed.
i) These continued to have confidence in their faith.
ii) These continued to exhibit endurance in life.
b) These would surely be among those who are well and truly saved.
Salvation is given out of the great grace of God. It is received with genuine faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, A true faith exhibits itself in confidence and endurance!
