"You had compassion on me in my chains..."

Text: Hebrews 10:34

A PERSONAL GLIMPSE

We have a rare personal glimpse of the author of Hebrews in the following text.

“For you had compassion on me in my chains,
and joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods,
knowing that you have a better and an enduring possession
for yourselves in heaven.”
Hebrews 10:34

1. In my chains

a) The author of Hebrews suffered imprisonment for his faith in the Lord Jesus Christ!
b) What he wrote about courageous endurance thus came from his personal example of suffering for his faith.

2. You had compassion on me

a) The readers of Hebrews were the companions (friends) who identified with him.
b) They had compassion for the author of Hebrews (their teacher/ or pastor).

3. Joyfully accepted the plundering of your goods

a) These good friends gave of their possessions to assist the author in his hour of need.
b) The help rendered was so extensive that it was described as “the plundering of their goods”.
i) It could mean paying for legal representation of the author in the courts of law.
ii) It could mean supporting him when he was in prison (food, clothing, medical assistance etc).
iii) All help rendered was offered “joyfully”.

4. Reason for giving such extensive help

a) Because of a mutual and strong faith in the Lord.
b) Because of a true and strong hope of an “enduring possession in heaven”.
c) This spiritual and eternal hope enabled the believers to cope with suffering.
