"The LORD will judge His people..."

Text: Hebrews 10:30c

THE DOCTRINE OF “JUDGMENT”

The subject of “judgment” is never easy to discuss. So many feelings and fears are evoked. And these things often cloud the discussion of this sensitive subject. Nevertheless we cannot skirt the issue just because it is difficult and challenging.

“For we know Him who said, ‘Vengeance is Mine,
I will repay,’ says the Lord. And again, ‘The LORD
will judge His people.”
Hebrews 10:30

1. For we know Him who said

a) This is a declaration of knowledge of God (the author and those who know God well).
b) This knowledge of God comes from the Old Testament Scriptures.

2. Two quotations were made from the Scriptures

a) “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay:
i) This text is a free quotation from Deuteronomy 32:35.
ii) It speaks of the prerogative of God to make “recompense”.
iii) The word “vengeance” must be understood in the context of “recompense”.
iv) “Vengeance” is not “unmitigated vengeful feelings” where God is concerned.
b) “The LORD will judge His people”
i) This text is cited from Deuteronomy 32:36a.
ii) The judging of the Lord’s people is always with great discernment.
iii) He will always exercise compassion on His servants (Cf. Deuteronomy 32:36b)

FEAR OF JUDGMENT

There is no fear of judgment where there is a reverence for what the Lord Jesus has done when He gave His life as a sacrifice for us! If we fully comprehend and appreciate that through His death we have access to The Holiest, there would never be a fear of the judgment of God. To those who despise what Christ has done, even if they call themselves “His people” there is every reason to fear the judgment of God!
