"This is the covenant that I will make..."

Text: Hebrews 10:16a

THE QUESTION OF AUTHORSHIP

The subject of the authorship is most interesting and important. Let us ponder the following text.

“This is the covenant that I will make with them
after those days, says the Lord…”
Hebrews 10:16a

1. The human instrument

The person who wrote this prophetic word was the prophet Jeremiah (Cf. Jeremiah 31:33-34).

2. The Divine author

The above text describes “the Lord” as the Divine Author! The human writer was just a scribe of God!

THE PROPHETIC WORD

The following things may be observed about the prophetic word.

1. There is authority behind the word (spoken or written).

God Himself is identified as the Divine Author behind the concept of this “Covenant”.

2. There is a revelatory aspect.

This “New Covenant” was revealed to Jeremiah. It would supersede the old Mosaic covenant.

3. There is also a fulfillment aspect.

Jesus came and fulfilled all requirements and thus ushered in the New Covenant.

4. There will also be a Witness

The Holy Spirit Himself was the Divine Witness concerning the fulfillment of this prophetic word.

5. Application of the Prophetic word:-

a) The prophetic word must be applied in full force when it has been fulfilled.
b) It is right to concentrate on the ramifications of the New Covenant that God had promised.
c) This New Covenant was far superior to the Mosaic Covenant.
d) Its centre was the Lord Jesus Christ and the sacrifice of His body for our atonement.
