THE CONTRIBUTION OF THE GOSPELS

The Four Gospels give us invaluable knowledge about the Lord Jesus Christ. Each of the Gospel writers had his own knowledge and perspective to share. When studied carefully we have ample knowledge about Jesus to come to a full and strong faith in the Lord!

INVALUABLE INSIGHTS

The spiritual hunger of the genuine disciple of the Lord Jesus Christ will cause him to look for deeper insights of the beloved Saviour. The following text offers a rich and invaluable insight that is not found in the Gospels.

“Therefore, when He came into the world, He said:
‘Sacrifice and offering You did not desire,
But a body You have prepared for Me.”
Hebrews 10:5

1. The unwritten sayings of Jesus

a) These are called “agrapha” (“non-written” sayings; plural form).
b) There must have been quite a few of these sayings (Cf. John 21:25).
c) The above text is an example of the unwritten (in the Gospels) texts.

2. Removing false notions about the “agrapha”

a) They may not have been written in the Gospels, but that does not mean that they were unknown.
b) They may appear as “agrapha” but that does not mean that they are of no value.

3. The significance of this unwritten saying of Jesus may be highlighted:-

a) This text highlights the importance of this unwritten word (agrapha).
b) He expresses clear understanding as to the will of God concerning two matters in particular:-
i) Though He was High Priest, His focus was not on “sacrifice and offering”.
ii) Instead, God prepared and gave to Jesus a human “body” (Cf. John 1:14).
Jesus demonstrated by the way He lived, a full understanding as to why God gave Him a physical human body. He would glorify His Father through His body.
