"Can never... make those who approach perfect" Hebrews 10:1b"

Text: Hebrews 10:1b

THE LAW OF SACRIFICES

It was God Himself who gave the law of sacrifices! However, there seemed to have been a wrong understanding and application of the law of sacrifices. Some believed that the law of sacrifices was all-sufficient. This wrong understanding had to be addressed and corrected.

“For the law, having a shadow of the good things to come,
and not the very image of the things, can never with these same
sacrifices, which they offer continually year by year, make those
who approach perfect.”
Hebrews 10:1

1. These same sacrifices

a) The high priest had to make the same sacrifice each year he entered into the Most Holy Place to make atonement for the sins of the nation.
b) These sacrifices had very limited efficacious value.
c) Each sacrifice made allowed the high priest to enter into the Most Holy Place safely.

2. Which they offer continually year by year

a) The sacrifices were made year by year in accordance to the law’s requirements.
b) The high priests had to exercise great care to fulfill all requirements.

3. Can never… make those who approach perfect

a) This was the most obvious limitation.
b) All the sacrifices offered could not bring about “perfection”.
i) If there was perfection then there would be no more need to offer any more sacrifices.
ii) The fact that sacrifices had to be made yearly only served to prove this point- nobody was made perfect through the law of sacrifices.
c) If the high priests could not be made perfect, then the worshippers would also not be made “perfect”.
The law of sacrifices according to the Levitical system was not designed to make anyone perfect. The answer must lie elsewhere. The answer lay in Christ Jesus!
