Haggai
Day
Day 23

"I... will make you like a signet ring"

Text: Haggai 2:23

MUCH ENCOURAGEMENT NEEDED

The closing word of the book of Haggai was given to Zerubbabel. His task as a governor was anything but easy.

1. The remnant

a) The returnees were afraid.
b) They had not experienced much success in all their economic endeavours.
c) Their temple building project had stalled badly.

2. Zerubbabel as the governor of Judah

a) He needed all the encouragement he could get.
b) Haggai ministered to him personally as God’s prophet.

AN UPLIFTING WORD OF ENCOURAGEMENT

The Lord’s word to Zerubbabel was indeed most uplifting.

“‘In that day,’ says the LORD of hosts,
‘I will take you, Zerubbabel My servant, the son of Shealtiel,’ says the LORD,
‘and will make you like a signet ring; for I have chosen you,’ says the LORD of hosts.”
Haggai 2:23

1. Zerubbabel

a) God honoured him by giving him a personal word of promise.
b) Zerubbabel was recognized as God’s servant.

2. What God would do for Zerubbabel

a) “I will take you”
This speaks of being especially selected by the LORD.
b) “And will make you like a signet ring”
i) A signet ring was used to seal documents.
ii) It was a symbol status.
iii) It was a symbol of authority.
c) “I have chosen you”
i) This strengthened the first word spoken, “I will take you”.
ii) The LORD had chosen Zerubbabel as the governor and he will succeed in his task as God’s servant.
