"According to the word that I covenanted with you"

Text: Haggai 2:5

DEALING WITH THE PROBLEM OF FEAR

The problem was not just discouragement and weakness of will. The deeper problem was that of “fear”.

“According to the word that I covenanted with you
when you came out of Egypt,
so My Spirit remains among you; do not fear!”
Haggai 2:5

1. “According to the word that I covenanted with you when you came out of Egypt”

a) “According to the word”
i) God’s word must be believed in.
ii) Faith in God’s word would help dispel fear and discouragement.
b) “That I covenanted with you”
i) God’s word was not just a general one.
ii) It was a covenanted word.
iii) God bound Himself to keeping His own covenanted word.
c) “When you came out of Egypt”
i) History would reveal that God had been faithful to His word of promise.
ii) He had led them out of Egypt successfully.
iii) He had given to Israel the land of Canaan as promised to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.
iv) The problems that Israel faced were of their own making. They had forsaken God!

2. “So My Spirit remains among you”

a) God’s Presence was with His people.
b) His Spirit was there:
i) To anoint Zerubbabel the governor.
ii) And to anoint Joshua the high priest.
iii) This was already evident in the life and ministry of Haggai the prophet.
c) His Spirit would be there to strengthen the remnant in their work of rebuilding the Temple.

3. “Do not fear”

a) They need not fear their enemies.
b) They also need not fear that they would not succeed in the Temple project.
c) They need not give in to fear that they would fail in their own personal businesses and their life.
