"The word of the LORD came by Haggai"

Text: Haggai 1:1

THE WORD OF THE LORD

The word of the Lord was vital in so many ways! The prophet Haggai acknowledged that the message he proclaimed came from the LORD.

“In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month,
on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came by
Haggai the prophet to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah,
and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying,”
Haggai 1:1

1. “In the second year of King Darius, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month”

a) There was another king called “Darius”.
b) He was called Darius the Mede. He conquered the Babylonians (Daniel 5:30-31).
c) This was a different “Darius”
i) He succeeded Cambyses who was the son of Cyrus.
ii) He had continued with Cyrus’ decree to let the Jew return to Judah to rebuild their land.

2. The word of the LORD

a) This was of critical importance.
b) The Lord’s word would provide:
i) Clear direction
ii) Needed Encouragement

3. Haggai

a) He was the prophet through whom God would speak.
b) His ministry was to the returnees in general.
c) He also had a very special word for two main leaders.

4. Two leaders mentioned in particular

a) Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel
i) He was a descendant of King David.
ii) He was called “governor” because the word “king” was not allowed to be used by the Persians.
b) Joshua, the son of Jehozadak, the high priest
i) He was the spiritual leader of the returnees.
ii) He was the head of the priests who ministered at the temple of God that was being constructed.
