"The perpetual hills bowed"

Text: Habakkuk 3:6

REVERENCE OF GOD ENHANCED

Habakkuk was troubled in heart and soul as he thought about the plight of his beloved nation. He was aware of the threat of impending invasion by the powerful and wicked Chaldeans. But as he dwelt on the majestic Being of God, he found a deeper reverence of the Lord!

“He stood and measured the earth;
He looked and startled the nations.
And the everlasting mountains were scattered,
The perpetual hills bowed.
His ways are everlasting.
I saw the tents of Cushan in affliction;
The curtains of the land of Midian trembled.”
Habakkuk 3:6-7

1. “He stood and measured the earth”

a) The Lord is pictured as One who surveys land.
b) This imagery was used by other prophets (Zechariah 2).
c) The Lord would never cause unnecessary harm.
d) He will carefully measure how He would punish the nations who were unrepentant.

c) The mountains and hills represent great power; but they pale in their significance before God.

4. “His ways are everlasting”

a) This is the LORD God.
b) He is the Creator.
c) His ways are truly “everlasting!”
d) All must bow in humble acknowledgment of the majesty of the LORD God.

5. Cushan and Midian

a) Bedouin tribes lived there and they were perpetual enemies of Israel/ Judah.
b) They trembled before the LORD God of Israel.

No matter how mighty they may appear to be; before the Lord, they will tremble!
