Day 29

"His brightness was like the light"

Text: Habakkuk 3:4

THE GLORIOUS MAJESTY OF GOD

It is difficult to describe the majesty of God. It is even harder to meditate on it. But this was what filled the heart and mind of Habakkuk as he dwelt on the Being of God!

“His brightness was like the light;
He had rays flashing from His hand,
And there His power was hidden.
Before Him went pestilence,
And fever followed at His feet.”
Habakkuk 3:4-5

Let us seek to learn how we may meditate on the Being of God as Habakkuk practiced it!

1. “His brightness was like the light”

a) “Brightness” is often associated with the Lord.
b) What “brightness” (“Light”) represents:
i) Purity
ii) Beauty of holiness
iii) Total absence of evil (often represented by darkness)

Light dispels all that is dark.

2. “He had rays flashing from His hand, and there His power was hidden”

a) Rays of light emanated from the Lord who is Light Supreme.
b) Though rays of light display God’s power, the full power of God is “hidden”.
c) The power of God is wonderfully manifested
i) In creation.
ii) In His wondrous and miraculous deeds of deliverance.

3. “Before Him went pestilence, and fever followed at His feet”

a) Occasionally, God’s power would be displayed punitively.
b) God had to punish ancient Egypt with plagues (Exodus 7-12).
c) Egypt had to be brought to its knees in humble acknowledgment of the majestic power of God!

EFFECTS OF SUCH MEDITATION

The following effects may be highlighted:

1. A sense of awe and reverence will be created (“fear of the Lord”).

2. A deeper faith in the Lord is produced.

3. A deeper appreciation of the need to exercise trust in God in difficult times and circumstances.
