"I am raising up the Chaldeans"

Text: Habakkuk 1:6

REVELATION ABOUT THE CHALDEANS

What God was going to reveal to Habakkuk was truly astounding. This was certainly not the kind of answer that he hoped to hear!

“For indeed I am raising up the Chaldeans,
A bitter and hasty nation
Which marches through the breadth of the earth,
To possess dwelling places that are not theirs.”
Habakkuk 1:6

1. A brief description of the Chaldeans

a) Historically
i) This was a nation in Southern Babylonia.
ii) It began to grow strongly in the 8th century BC.
iii) The Babylonians were the ones who defeated the Assyrian Empire.
b) Biblically
i) A bitter nation.
ii) A hasty nation (impulsive).
iii) It had powerful political ambitions to conquer the world.
iv) They sought to possess the wealth of the countries they defeated.

2. “For indeed I am raising up the Chaldeans”

a) This was a difficult statement to comprehend.
b) It was even harder to accept what God was saying.
c) How could God be the One who would “raise up the Chaldeans?”

AN IMPORTANT THEOLOGICAL TRUTH

God certainly was the covenant Lord of Israel. There was a definite and real covenantal relationship with Israel. But God’s sovereign power was not restricted to Israel!

1. A Covenantal Relationship

a) Through Abraham (Genesis 15).
b) Confirmed through Moses (Exodus 24).

2. But the Lord is still the God of all flesh (Jeremiah 32:27)

a) God can raise up any nation and He can also put down any nation!
b) He raised up the Philistines and the Syrians too (Amos 9:7).
c) God certainly can raise up the Chaldeans… even though this is a hard truth to digest!
