Text: Genesis 23:1-20
A STUDY OF THE ANCIENT ART OF DIPLOMATIC DIALOGUE
A close study of the conversation between Abraham and the sons of Heth reveal an intriguing assortment of social protocol applied. The modern day approach of buying and selling of a piece of land is a far cry from that practised in Abraham’s time. Let us note the following features that stand out.
1. Great Courtesy shown at all times.
Abraham shows great courtesy to the sons of Heth. He speaks in a self-deprecating manner.
“I am a foreigner and a visitor among you…”
GENESIS 23:4a
The Sons of Heth make an appropriate response. They offer due praise to Abraham, extolling his virtues.
“Hear us, my lord: You are a mighty prince among us…”

2. Great Humility Displayed Openly
Abraham knew the custom of the land well. On hearing the kind words of the Sons of Heth, he expressed his appreciation in deep humility.
“Then Abraham stood up and bowed himself to the people
of the land, the sons of Heth…”GENESIS 23:7
3. A Long Drawn Affair
Abraham needed to purchase a piece of ground for the purpose of burying Sarah. However, he could not simply ask to buy a piece of land. He had to bring up the discussion of the possible purchase of the burial plot in a very roundabout way.
a) First mention of need for burial ground
Abraham mentioned his need for a piece of land to bury the dead. However, he did not bring up the matter of the cost of the land. (Genesis 23:4b)
b) An offer to select the best pieces of land
The sons of Heth offered Abraham the choicest pieces of land to bury Sarah. Nothing would be withheld. But note that there is no discussion of the price of the property. (Genesis 23:6)
c) Abraham names the plot of land and offers to pay “full price”. (Genesis 23:9)
d) The landowner offers the parcel of land free to Abraham (Genesis 23:10-11)
e) Abraham once again bows to the people of the land in appreciation (Genesis 23:12)
One has to display utmost, genuine courtesy in ancient transactions!
